Reverend Steven Mitchell, Pastor

Chronicles of Steve Blog

Rev. Steven R Mitchell earned his Masters of Divinity at Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas City, KS in 1986 with emphasis in Pastoral Care. He was called in 1986 to be pastor of Kittitas Community Church, Kittitas, WA., where he was ordained and served for almost five years. In the fall of 1990, Steven took an extended sabbatical that eventually lead him into the faith community of the United Church of Christ, where he received his privilege of call status in the fall of 2003. Pastor Steven has been an active member of both University Congregational UCC and of St. Paul’s UCC both of Seattle, WA, and has been serving as Transitional Minister since Sept 2009 to First Congregational UCC, in Rock Springs, WY.

Steven has been involved in many varying capacities as both a lay leader and as a pastor. Steven served as chairperson of a committee that helped in the resettlement of 200 Southeast Asian refugees in the late 1970’s in Wichita, KS; while serving in Kittitas, WA, Steven was on the County Board of Health as an advisor with AID’s education, Executive Board member of the Drug and Alcohol Council of Kittitas County, as well as program coordinator for his local Baptist Association of churches and contributor to religious articles of the Ellensburg, WA newspaper. While in Seattle, Steven continued his strong support of ecumenical activities through supply pulpits, study groups and solo work for special occasions with such denominations as the Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopalian and Jewish congregations.

Among the gifts that Steven brings with his ministry and pastoral experience, is that of working outside of the church in sales and management positions. Steven sold real estate in Seattle for almost a decade, has worked for large corporations in both retail and wholesale. As a lay person, Steven has served on a variety of church boards and held a seat on several church councils and before coming to Rock Springs was serving as church moderator at St. Paul’s UCC, Seattle.

On a non-professional note, Steven is the father of three children: Bobbie Jo Baiers, Steven R Mitchell, II and Tara Jean Simmons. Steven is the proud grandfather of 18 grandchildren ranging from 13 yrs old down to new born. Steven feels quite blessed to have Paul Allen at his side and helpmate in both life and ministry, as Paul brings his gifts of music and grounded Christian perspectives. Steven is an avid movie buff, loves to read, hike on day trips, travel and enjoy good food in the company of friends.
