One way Mountain View United Church “Breathes Out” is through its Harambee Circle of Hope. This Circle of Hope is modeled on the concept of “harambee” which is a Kenyan tradition of the community working together in unity to accomplish a communal task that would be difficult or impossible to carry out alone. Harambee translates literally, as “all pull together.” In this model, we do not “adopt” or “sponsor” but rather we come “alongside” to assist, as we are able. In this model, we do not assume we know how to fix the problem or what is best but rather we ask those we are traveling alongside “how can we be of help to you at this point in time in your journey?” In this model, we travel with the person/family on their journey as companions – not as fixers or advice givers.
